You Don’t Need to Buy Dessert if You Have Bananas (Freezer Banana Crunch Bites)

A budget-friendly pizza dough recipe that makes 8 pizzas and freezes beautifully

This wasn’t supposed to be a “recipe.” I just wanted something cold, sweet, and actually filling… without buying dessert or eating a bunch of sugar. It’s getting warmer, and I needed something I could grab straight from the freezer that felt like a treat—but was still made from real food.

So I used what I had:
bananas, nut butter, chocolate.

That’s it.

And honestly? These are better than most store-bought desserts. They’re sweet, a little salty, crunchy, and actually satisfying. This is exactly what Broke But Fed is about:
use what you already have and turn it into something that works.

Broke But Fed: Banana Crunch Bites

Ingredients

  • Bananas (as many as fit on one tray), sliced into ½-inch rounds

  • Almond butter or peanut butter

  • ½–1 cup chocolate chips

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil

  • 2–3 tbsp cacao nibs

  • Pinch of salt

  • Optional: light sprinkle of cinnamon

How to Make Banana Crunch Bites

Step 1: Prep tray

Line a large baking tray with parchment paper.

Step 2: Slice & arrange

Slice bananas into ½-inch rounds and place on tray in a single layer.

Keep them close, but don’t overlap.

Step 3: Add nut butter

Top each slice with about ½ teaspoon almond or peanut butter.

If space is tight, sandwich two slices together with the nut butter in between.

Step 4: Freeze

Place tray in freezer for 30–40 minutes, until bananas are firm.

Step 5: Melt chocolate

In a small saucepan, melt chocolate chips with coconut oil over low heat.

Remove from heat and stir until smooth.

Step 6: Top & finish

Remove bananas from freezer. Drizzle chocolate over each piece.

Immediately sprinkle with:

  • cacao nibs

  • pinch of salt

  • optional cinnamon

This is where the flavor comes together.

Step 7: Final freeze

Return to freezer for 10–15 minutes, until chocolate is set.

To Store

  • Store in freezer in a container or bag

  • They keep really well and don’t last long

To Serve

Let sit out for 2–3 minutes before eating. They soften slightly and taste way better.

Once so it’s coated in oil. Cover tightly with plastic wrap.

Broke But Fed Tips

  • The salt matters, don’t skip it!

  • Peanut butter is cheaper and works just as well

  • These are sweet, but they actually fill you up

  • Great for kids and adults

  • Way cheaper than buying dessert

You don’t need to buy desserts. You just need something simple you can make once and keep in the freezer.

This is one of those things.
